5 Essential Oils that may be Harming your Dog

We love making our house smell just as good as the next person, but some of those aromatic essential oils you love might not be as pet-friendly as you think. While essential oils can work wonders for us humans, some of them can spell trouble for our furry friends. So, before you embark on your aromatherapy journey, let's take a quick sniff at the essential oils toxic for pets.

Lavender Love-Hate: Oh, the sweet scent of lavender – it's like a spa day in a bottle, right? But hold your horses. While a whiff of lavender might help you relax, it can be a bummer for your pets. Lavender contains compounds that can cause upset tummies, skin irritation, or even allergic reactions for your furry pals. So, if you're thinking of giving little Muffin a lavender-scented bath, think again!

Citrus Caution: Citrus essential oils like orange, lemon, and lime might make your home smell fresh and zesty, but they're not so great for your pets. These oils contain high levels of a compound called limonene, which can be seriously harmful to both dogs and cats. It can lead to drooling, vomiting, and even depression in pets. So, unless you want a grumpy pet with a sour tummy, keep everything citrus-scented out of their reach!

Peppermint Predicament: Ah, peppermint – the cool, invigorating scent that wakes you up in a jiffy. But when it comes to your pets, this minty marvel might be more trouble than it's worth. Peppermint essential oil can mess with your pet's digestive system, causing nausea and discomfort. So, even if you're tempted to share that candy cane-scented diffuser blend, remember – it's a big no-no for your furbaby.

Tea Tree Tumble: Tea tree oil has been hailed as a miracle worker in the natural health world, but when it comes to pets, it's a bit of a villain. This potent oil contains compounds that can cause lethargy, weakness, and even tremors in pets. Cats are especially sensitive to tea tree oil, so if you're a cat parent, steer clear of this one. It's always better to be safe than sorry!

Eucalyptus Oops: Eucalyptus oil is like a breath of fresh air, right? Well, not so much for your pets. This oil can cause drooling, vomiting, and diarrhoea in your furry pals. And if they happen to ingest it, things could get even worse. So, even if you think your pup might enjoy a spa day with eucalyptus, remember that it's best to save it for your personal pampering sessions.

So there you have it – a quick rundown of the essential oils toxic for pets. We know you want the best for your fur babies, and that includes a home that smells lovely and inviting. But it's important to remember that not everything that's good for us is good for them. If you're into essential oils or natural cleaning solutions that are scented with oils and you have pets at home, make sure you're choosing pet-safe options before using any oils or scents around them.

Keep those tails wagging and those purrs coming, and remember – a safe and happy pet is a pet parent's top priority.

  • Hey Sandy,
Unfortunately, the symptoms associated with each oil and scent can happen as a result of using them in a diffuser. Some vets have reported pets having hallucinations, mood changes and even seizures from being exposed to these oils from a diffuser or when used in some cleaning products. Our best recommendation is to switch to other non-toxic oils for the diffuser for any rooms that your pets have access to.
